Looking back at the series of my earthworks, the form was formed by rolling the soil/clay around and drawing a line as if drawing a picture. The lines piled up like a mountain is formed in layers, and as I work to fill in the gaps between the lines drawn in this way with color, the lines have become increasingly important and meaningful to me. Not a dividing line, not a stacking line, but a circle where the ends of the lines are connected. And one thing in that shape, a rubber band... that tightly binds scattered things and open things. Soil/clay has the property of leaving traces because it is receptive to other things, but rubber has a unique property of resilience to keep returning to its original shape. I try to fix the moment created by resilience, the strange charm of the two different characters, with soil/clay. Moment captured. A place where time and space stopped. Thus, the line reached the bundle, which is the starting and ending point. The joy when the natural and obvious reason is newly recognized has become an empty large vessel that can be filled with the results of new inspiration one by one. |
